Manager of Staff Development

JOB SUMMARY: The Manager of Staff Development has overall responsibility for the agency’s staff development, orientation and continuing education programs.

REPORTS TO: Director of Quality Care Management

Bachelor’s in Nursing with preference for a Master’s in a health related field or matriculation in a master’s degree program within 12 months of date of hire or promotion.

  • Three years’ experience in community health, home care or hospice
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Two years’ experience as an educator in a health care facility, college or other academic setting
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
  • Preferred: experience as a nurse planner for an American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or state nurses’ association accredited provider unit of continuing nursing education
  • Preferred: experience with eLearning creation and learning management systems
  • Preferred: policy and procedure experience especially with regard to regulatory requirements and CHAP standards


  • Develop and carry out an annual staff educational program which shall include all mandated programs, in collaboration with the VNASH management team and Directors
  • Develops a process and tracking mechanism for general orientation of all new team members
  • Develops a process and tracking mechanism for orientation of home health, hospice and community health clinical staff
  • Develops a process to ensure that all new hires receive all required educational programs
  • Develops educational/orientation programs, processes and policies, which are congruent with all agency policies, regulatory requirements and CHAP standards
  • Collaborates with Human Resources to ensure that all new hires have all required orientation documentation in their files at the time of confirmation (completion of the introductory period)
  • Coordinates CPR certification program per agency policy and process
  • Ability to lead staff education efforts out of business hours as required
  • Maintain and update Nursing Procedure Manuals on an annual basis and as needed
  • Monitor and schedule nursing staff certification in infusion therapy and phlebotomy
  • Collaborate with Clinical Managers and Vice President of Operations in the oversight of the Preceptor Program
  • Provide instruction and support to preceptors. Coordinate preceptor evaluations to identify strengths and weaknesses for future educational needs
  • Oversee the compilation and revision, as needed, of the Nursing Orientation Manual
  • Collaborates with Rehab services, Quality, Community health services and Adult Day Club to identify educational needs and facilitate programs to meet these needs
  • Provide recommendations with policy and procedure development and revision, in collaboration with the CEO, Vice President of Operations and/or Director of Quality Care Management
  • Actively participate in identifying new staff development opportunities, through an annual employee education survey
  • Maintain current knowledge of practice standards through continuing education
  • Participate on agency committees
  • Provide the Hospice educational programs to contracted nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other residential settings as requested
