Adult Day Center Garden Design Wins Award
Congratulations to members of the Basking Ridge Garden Club, responsible for the design and maintenance of the Adult Day Center garden. The organization has received the First Place Award for therapy garden design in a national competition. Presented by National Garden Clubs, Inc, the award recognizes garden projects that help people with disabilities and illnesses, utilizing gardening as a form of therapy or treatment. The Adult Day Center is a service provided by nonprofit home and community healthcare provider Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Somerset Hills. A social adult day program model, the Center offers a warm and supervised environment for older adults who can benefit from socialization and supervision, including those with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
The Adult Day Center wandering garden provides therapeutic benefits by offering an opportunity for exercise, mental stimulation, social interaction, and stress reduction. ADC garden activities also help bring an improved sense of purpose and well-being. The Basking Ridge Garden Club has maintained the garden since 2007, including seasonal and year-round projects. In addition to responsibility for the beautiful variety of annuals, perennials, potted flowers, raised planting beds, and trees, Club members host periodic interactive enrichment programs for the Center members on topics such as flower arranging and plant care.
