VNA Awards Nursing Scholarships
BASKING RIDGE, NJ (June 13, 2013) – The Board of Trustees of the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Somerset Hills has awarded its 2013 Nursing Scholarships to high school seniors Dana Monte of Boonton, NJ and Kelly O’Neill of Bernardsville, NJ. Both students plan to pursue baccalaureate degrees in nursing and have received $1000 scholarships to help finance their education.
Boonton High School senior, Dana Monte, will be attending Pennsylvania State University. Raised in a family plagued by chronic illness, she feels passionate about making a positive difference to the physical and mental well-being of others. After rewarding experiences assisting with childbirth and sibling classes at Saint Clare’s Hospital, she developed a strong interest in labor and delivery nursing. “My long term goal is to start my own practice as a midwife, bringing new life into the world,” said Monte.
Kelly O’Neill, a graduating senior at Bernards High School, plans to attend Villanova University College of Nursing. With a strong desire to help others, O’Neill’s interest in a nursing career was inspired by her volunteer work at organizations including Matheny Medical Center, Morristown Hospital, and with members at the Adult Day Center at the VNA of Somerset Hills. “I hope that by simply talking and doing activities, that I have made a positive impact on their day in some way,” said O’Neill.
“The VNA is honored to support these accomplished students and recognize their decision to pursue a rewarding career in nursing and the healthcare profession,” said Ann Painter, President & CEO, VNA of Somerset Hills. “We congratulate these two individuals, and all the scholarship candidates, on their efforts and accomplishments during high school.”
Each year since 1991, the VNA has awarded college scholarships to high school seniors from Somerset or Morris County, planning to receive a degree in nursing. The scholarships are financed by proceeds from the VNA’s bi-annual Rummage Sale and other fundraising efforts.
